Frequently Asked Orthodontic Questions.
At what age should I schedule an orthodontic screening appoinment?
Bite problems (malocclusions) can be corrected and smiles enhanced through orthodontics at any age. But there is an optimum age at which to begin most orthodontics to ensure that the best possible result is achieved within the shortest period of time with the least expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of malocclusion problems or no later than age 7. At this early stage of development, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but timely evaluation will allow Dr. McCulloch to anticipate future problems, advise you as the optimum time to begin treatment and answer any questions you may have regarding your child's dental health. You can schedule your child's initial orthodontic evaluation by calling us at 206-232-9600.
Is it too late to have braces if I am already an adult?
A surprising percentage of our patients are adults. In fact, about half of the patients we treat are over the age of 18. Our patient pool currently ranges from age 3-83! In this country, about 25 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults. Dental health and optimum facial appearance are vitally important to adults. No patient is "too old" to wear braces!
As an adult, if I don't want to wear braces, what are my other options?
Many of our patients, both teen and adult, do not want to wear traditional braces. Invisalign is an option for these patients. Invisalign is a series of clear, removable retainers that gradually move the teeth to the desired location. Aligners are easy to wear, convenient and esthetic.
What will the Initial Examination appointment be like?
The initial examination appointment will consist of orthodontic records (photos, x-rays if appropriate), a thorough orthodontic evaluation, a discussion about your concerns, review of your health history, a determination of need for orthodontic correction and an outline of potential treatment options. At this appointment, we will address the following questions:
- Is there an orthodontic concern which requires correction?
- If so, what is it and what are the effects on current and future dental/oral health?
- Can it be corrected?
- When is the best time to begin correction in order to accomplish it in the most efficient and effective manner?
- What are the options for treatment (retainer, braces, Invisalign)?
- How long will treatment take?
- What is an estimate of the cost of treatment and what are the payment options?
Can kids wear Invisalign?
Invisalign has recently launched the "Invisalign First" product which can be used in the mixed dentition when both adult and baby teeth are present. In kids, Invisalign can help to create space for crowded teeth, expand the dental arches and improve the esthetics of your child's bite.
